The Haunted Storyline: Emily Alton’s Revenge
Set on New Year’s Eve 1892, the story centers on Emily Alton, the young daughter of wealthy Victorian high-society parents. While her parents hosted lavish galas in the grand hall below, Emily was left alone, forgotten in the attic with only her toy dollhouse for company. As music and laughter echoed through the floors, Emily’s isolation turned into deep bitterness and resentment.
Dark forces surrounding the estate fed on her frustration, turning Emily into a vessel of demonic evil. Her parents mysteriously vanished, leaving Emily to lay claim to the estate. Repossessed under unnatural circumstances, the abandoned Manor now hosts an “Open House” – inviting unsuspecting guests inside as Emily seeks new playmates for eternity.
The Unique Mack Rides System & History
The origin of the ride system dates back to 1992 when legendary theme park designer John Wardley collaborated with Keith Sparks to build Europe’s largest dark ride, costing £4 million. Wardley wanted an intimate ghost train experience without using an endless omnimover chain where guests could see cars ahead and behind.
Engineered by Mack Rides, the system features 34 independent 6-seater cars with onboard computer monitoring. The vehicles travel bumper-to-bumper through the loading station before peeling off, accelerating, and whisking riders individually into the dark scenes to maximize surprise and intimacy.
For deep historical insights into the creation of the original Haunted House, its 2003 interactive transformation into Duel: The Haunted House Strikes Back, and its 2023 rebirth, we highly recommend John Wardley’s books:

Special Effects & Ride Highlights
The Curse at Alton Manor pushes dark ride technology to new heights with several UK firsts:
- Twisted Projection Mapping: Screens seamlessly blend with physical set pieces, transporting riders into the rooms of Emily’s demonic dollhouse.
- Infinity Mirror Corridor: A long hallway of mirrors uses synchronised “dummy cars” behind tinting glass to make it appear as though a creepy doll is riding right alongside your vehicle.
- The Flying Shadow: In one striking scene, Emily appears before riders, declaring “It’s time to play!” as her shadow grows exponentially up the wall before the vehicle speeds away.
- Nostalgic Easter Eggs: Keep a sharp eye out for gravestones in the queue referencing defunct Alton Towers rides, the original 1992 rocking horse, and a zombified rubber duck from The Flume.
- The Giant Finale: In the climactic finale scene, a giant disfigured head and arm of Emily appear overhead, seemingly ripping the entire roof off the dollhouse as she screams “You’re mine!”

Viral Teasers & The Manchester Northern Quarter Mural
To promote the attraction’s 2023 launch, Alton Towers deployed creative marketing campaigns across the UK. On London’s Isle of Dogs, the park erected the world’s first-ever “Haunted Doll’s House” pop-up, where brave members of the public experienced eerie clues and live encounters with Emily Alton.

In Manchester’s Northern Quarter (located at the corner of High Street and Thomas Street, What3Words ///gasp.stand.stump), Alton Towers commissioned a spectacular UV mural. While looking like a standard Victorian portrait during the day, nighttime UV lighting transforms the mural to reveal Emily’s sinister demon face!
