Free Entry to Wales’ Historic Sites

Conwy Castle

Wales Open Doors Festival is a much-loved annual event that gives visitors the rare chance to explore the country’s historic buildings, landmarks, and hidden gems, completely free of charge. Organised by Cadw, the Welsh Government’s historic environment service, the festival celebrates Wales’ rich architectural and cultural heritage by opening the doors to hundreds of fascinating sites that are usually closed to the public or charge an entry fee.

From castles, churches and stately homes to industrial heritage sites, gardens and museums, Open Doors offers a unique opportunity to discover the stories behind some of Wales’ most remarkable places. Many venues also host guided tours, talks, exhibitions and family-friendly activities that bring the past to life. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an architecture lover, or simply curious about what lies behind Wales’ most intriguing façades, the festival promises something for everyone.

A Celebration of Welsh Heritage

The Open Doors Festival is part of the wider European Heritage Days initiative, which takes place across more than 50 countries every September. In Wales, the event shines a light on the country’s diverse history, from medieval fortresses and sacred chapels to industrial revolution landmarks and mid-century modern architecture. It’s also a celebration of community, with local volunteers and custodians sharing their passion and knowledge of the places they help to preserve.

Each year, the programme varies, with hundreds of venues taking part across every corner of Wales. You might find yourself climbing the towers of Conwy Castle, exploring the Victorian splendour of Penarth Pier Pavilion, or stepping inside the Senedd in Cardiff Bay. In more rural areas, smaller gems like St Winefride’s Well in Holywell or Plas Newydd House on Anglesey often feature in the lineup, giving visitors a deeper appreciation of local heritage.

What is Cadw?

Cadw is the Welsh Government’s historic environment service, working for an accessible and well-protected historic environment for Wales. Approximately 250 people work for Cadw across a range of disciplines. Around 100 of these people are custodians working at monuments in their care or are part of the in-house teams that undertake conservation and maintenance at the many sites. Cadw also has specialist staff, including field monument wardens and inspectors of historic buildings, ancient monuments and historic parks and gardens, who are based all over Wales.
