Affordable Days Out That Won’t Break the Bank

Cadbury World - Have a Go Zone

Finding fun, affordable things to do in the UK as a family gets harder when the colder months arrive. During the summer months, it’s a lot easier to do outdoor events and activities that cost less. But, with winter, indoor activity tends to cost money, and spending time outdoors is no longer easy, or indeed, fun. With rising costs, it’s important to find activities that are budget-friendly, yet still offer everyone a good time. Having quality time with children and the family doesn’t have to mean spending a lot, but neither does it mean that having a budget means a compromise on the quality of the day out. There are ways to have fun without spending a huge amount.

Year-Round Attractions Worth Visiting

Throughout the year, there are different attractions that can be visited, no matter the weather. Some of these include the likes of theme parks, aquariums, castles and live experiences. Among these options are numerous family-friendly spots that can really be an enjoyable day out for all.

For example, Alton Towers has a range of exciting, terrifying rides suitable for older kids and parents. But it also has CBeebies Land, which is great for the younger members of the family. SEA LIFE Centres offer a fun day indoors and couple this with some great learning and educational opportunities.

There are other exciting activities and places to visit, too. Cadbury World, Hertfordshire Zoo, Warwick Castle and the Crystal Maze Live Experience are all options in and around London. Each of these attractions offers something slightly different, but can be a whole lot of fun, appealing to families of all ages.

Seasonal Events in November and December

The winter months are also home to a variety of seasonal events. Different parts of the country offer various Christmas Market events, which can offer fun games, shopping and more. Some of the cities offering big Christmas markets include York, Bath and Manchester, offering a chance to explore the city as well as the markets.

With Christmas closing in, many major cities also offer various other events such as Christmas light switch-ons. For example, festive light events include Oxford Street in London as well as Edinburgh. Events like these are completely free, and make a great fun day out for everyone, typically filled with Christmas cheer, food and shopping.

Other Christmas events in the country include winter experiences such as those found at Legoland Windsor or the Tower of London. These can be a lot of fun, immersing the family into the Christmas vibe without overspending. While the winter events do cost, booking them in advance is typically cheaper than turning up on the day, which means some careful planning can go a long way to meeting the budget.

Saving Money with Discount Codes and Online Bookings

Following on from this, in addition to carefully researching free attractions and events, there are other strategic tips to consider to make the most of winter activities. As touched upon, planning is key.

Many winter events and activities are cheaper when booked online, which is where using discount codes and vouchers can come in useful. You can find out more on Discoup that can help families find and use such codes. These sites are good for collating all the offers out there, categorising them and making it a lot easier to find useful discounts and promotions. Using online searches and platforms such as these helps to make winter experiences a lot more accessible.

Sometimes, there are online deals with limited-time promotions such as reduced family passes, 2-for-1 offers or senior discounts. In addition to the potential of skipping queues and not missing out when tickets are sold out on the day, booking early means getting cheaper tickets, though these must be purchased from trusted sites.

Of course, as part of the larger picture on saving money when doing activities and excursions, it’s also a good idea to consider money-saving indoor or home activities too. Baking, crafting or board games are typically low-cost options that can be done at home. There are also free workshops, such as those at Hobbycraft, Apple Stores or Dobbies Garden Centres, which can reduce costs while offering a lot of fun. Supermarket kids-eat-free schemes or visiting museums are further examples of free activities that can get the whole family together.
