The popular Alpamare waterpark in Scarbrough was permanently closed in December 2023 following an initial announcement stating a temporary closure due to rising costs over the winter months.
Alpamare to Potentially Reopen in July 2024
The council took possession of the site in December last year when Benchmark Leisure Ltd went into administration. To fulfil the aspirations to re-open the facility this summer, the council has been undertaking work to keep the facility in a safe and operational state. A preferred new operator for the waterpark looks set to be appointed this month. North Yorkshire Council hopes that the attraction will reopen to the public in July in time for the summer 2024 season.
New Operator Set to be Appointed
Members of the authority’s executive will meet on Tuesday next week (May 21) and hear the results of a three-week tender exercise to find a new short-term tenant for the attraction on a 12-month basis. They will be asked to approve plans for officers to enter into negotiations with a preferred bidder.
North Yorkshire Council’s deputy leader, Cllr Gareth Dadd, said:
“We will now work with the preferred bidder who has experience of operating facilities of this nature and will continue to work towards opening in time for the summer season as we promised when we took this site on.”

Travelling to Alpamare Scarborough
If you’re travelling by car, Alpamare Scarborough is easy to find. Arriving via the A171 from the north, the A170 from the west or the A64 or A165 from the south, join the A64 at the south end of the town. From there, Alpamare Scarborough and the North Bay area is clearly signposted. There 300 car parking spaces in the adjacent Pay & Display car park.
Travelling by Train
Scarborough is well connected by train from across the north of England including Huddersfield, Leeds, York, Manchester and Liverpool. Scarborough train station is just a mile away from Alpamare Scarborough, that’s either a 20-minute walk or just 6 minutes in a taxi.
