The ninth and final piece in a series of animal-themed artwork by Banksy, the illusive artist appeared overnight at the entrance to London Zoo.
Animals Escaping from London Zoo
The artwork at the zoo depicted a gorilla holding up part of a roller shutter allowing birds and a sea lion to escape. This final piece followed a series of illustrations that appeared across England’s capital city over nine consecutive days.
London Zoo to Preserve the Artwork
The gorilla and other animals that appeared to have escaped from the London Zoo in Banksy’s most recent work have been taken into safekeeping.
London Zoo said it removed the Banksy work to preserve it and to return the zoo’s entrance to full operation after visitors flocked to see it over a five day period.
It was replaced with a reproduction of the work and a sign that said: “Banksy woz ere.”
Putting Wildlife in the Spotlight
Banksy’s latest artwork which appeared overnight on London Zoo’s main entrance on has quickly become a global news sensation.
The zoo protected the mural when it was on display behind a see-through plastic shield and guarded by security officers.
“We’re thrilled by the joy this artwork has already brought to so many, but primarily, we’re incredibly grateful to Banksy, for putting wildlife in the spotlight,” Kathryn England, the zoo’s chief operating officer, said on its website.
“This has become a significant moment in our history that we’re keen to properly preserve.”
