Alton Towers - Project Ocean

2024 was a great year for new rides and attractions at UK Theme Parks with Hyperia at Thorpe Park, LEGOLAND Windsor Minifigure Speedway and Nemesis Reborn at Alton Towers to name a few. Limited details have been provided for 2025 but below we have summarised what we know so far.

Get an Insight into the New Attractions Coming in 2025 and Beyond

This year there are only a couple of construction projects underway but lots of proposals have been submitted for new rides, attractions and even resort hotel accommodation in 2025. Keep reading for an insight into what’s coming in 2025 and beyond.

New Rides and Attractions at Chessington World of Adventures Resort

New Roller Coaster for Chessington

There’s lot’s of exciting new developments planned for Chessington World of Adventures Resort. One of the most significant updates is a proposed ‘refresh’ to the Wild Asia section of the Surrey-based Theme Park (also utilising the glamping area) by replacing it with a new potentially Minecraft themed land that will deliver a series of unique immersive experiences. This will involve fully themed escapism, play areas and sensory environments for the whole family to enjoy.

The centre-piece will be a new rollercoaster with indoor and outdoor elements (again potentially Minecraft themed). Other attractions will include a re-themed and re-positioned Kobra ride, a new indoor ride and an outdoor themed play area. Interactive retail and food and beverage buildings will also be provided.

These proposals are still in their early stages so it may be a few years before they come to fruition.

New Childrens Land

The next proposal is to create a new themed land in the Mexicana section of the park where the Scorpion Express is currently located.

The design concept is being developed with the aim to create an immersive themed experience for younger guests, similar to CBeebies Land at Alton Towers although based on a different theme. This could include:

  • ‘My first’ rollercoaster
  • Children’s flat rides
  • Themed playscape
  • Meet and greet area
  • Food and beverage
  • Themed retail area

Lodge Accommodation

Planning permission was granted at the end of 2018 for 34 visitor accommodation lodges north-west of the Safari Hotel. Works to build the lodges began in 2021 but were paused. Merlin is keen to complete the development and is targeting a 2027 opening. These themed lodges will be similar to those in the new Woodland Village at nearby LEGOLAND Windsor.

Chessington Waterpark

Chessington World of Adventures Resort submitted a planning application in 2023 for a new waterpark extension to the Safari Hotel. This will be a great addition to the resort’s current Theme Park, Zoo, SEALIFE and Accommodation offering. Initial images indicate that this will be a similar setup to Alton Towers Waterpark in Staffordshire.

New Slides and Attractions

Proposed attractions at the new water park include a wave pool, infinity pool, waterslides and an outdoor ‘lazy’ river.

In a similar manner to Alton Towers Resort the Water Park would be open all year round helping increase hotel occupancy rates in the quieter months when the main theme park is closed. It is likely that the new water park will be open to both day guests and those staying at the on-site hotels.

Paultons Park

The latest addition to Paulton’s Park is Ghostly Manor. This new attraction will be housed in the park’s former 4D cinema building.

Ghostly Manor is an innovative and interactive dark ride inspired by the historic Paultons Manor, as well as the theme park‘s rich history. Guests of Ghostly Manor will learn about famed ghost hunter Dr Kinley, who is searching for an elusive ice ghost at the North Pole.

While he is away, visitors will discover that many ghosts have escaped from his manor. Using an interactive tool called the ‘phantom phaser’, guests must recapture each ghost.

The manor’s most terrifying ghost, named ‘Ohjee’, will prove difficult to catch, but riders score points for shooting ghosts in each scene, with total scores displayed at the ride’s exit.

Ghostly Manor at Paultons Park will open to guests on 17 May 2025, visit the Ghostly Manor website for a chance to win tickets to visit the attraction.

Alton Towers’ new ride for 2025 (codenamed Project Ocean) is located in the area between Nemesis Reborn and Galactica.

As per the majority of the Forbidden Valley, the ride is likely to be themed around The Phalanx, a secret organisation tasked with keeping the Nemesis beast under control since its discovery in 1994.

The eagerly-anticipated new ride is set to open to thrill seekers towards the start of the 2025 season.

Project Horizon

In February 2023 plans were approved for a new indoor attraction at Alton Towers Resort, since then we have seen no further progress on this proposed new development with very few details available. If this new addition were to go ahead, it is highly likely to be an enclosed rollercoaster.

An Intamin multi-dimensional rollercoaster?

This ride model offers a number of great elements including:
⚙️ 360° Turntable
⚙️ Motion Table

The Dead Beat Scaremaze featured a poster that stated ‘The Final Beach Party’ Amity Beach 8:25pm Sunday 3rd November. The more observant amongst you will have observed that 8.25pm converts to 2024, with Sunday 3rd November being the final day of the 2024 season.

A Permanent Hotel for Thorpe Park

Bournemouth-based Bear Architects were recently commissioned by Thorpe Park Resort to develop a design proposal for a new 100-room hotel. The proposed new hotel can be viewed on Bear Architects’ website, with the page URL clearly indicating that the design is for Thorpe Park Resort https://www.beararchitects.co.uk/thorpe-park-hotel. According to the webpage, the proposal was very well received and is currently on hold pending alignment with the client’s development strategy.

The proposed new development named ‘Lakeside at Thorpe Park’ features rooms looking out across the lake that surrounds the Resort. It would mark a significant upgrade from the current Thorpe Shark Cabins, offering guests a more traditional and comfortable lodging option. The addition of this new hotel would not only elevate the guest experience but could also strengthen Thorpe Park’s standing as a destination resort, opening up the opportunity for enhanced amenities and facilities appealing to those looking for immersive, multi-day visits.

New Attractions at Blackpool Pleasure Beach for 2025

Ice Blast at Blackpool Pleasure Beach is currently being refurbished and will return to action in the 2025 season rethemed as launch pad.

New Gyro Swing Ride for Blackpool Pleasure Beach

Blackpool Pleasure Beach will be installing a new Gyro Swing manufactured by Intamin.

Intamin, a manufacturer of record-breaking theme park rides, supplies its Gyro Swing in 2 different formats. The smaller 32-seat version can be found at parks across the world, including Drayton Manor in Staffordshire.

If the speculation is correct then it is possible that we may be able to experience a new 40-seat version at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in 2025. The Intamin Gyro Swing Rides boast the most powerful drive system on the market allowing riders to experience complete weightlessness at the top of the pendulum.

The new Viking-themed ride will feature outward-facing seats, just like the smaller version at Drayton Manor. The ride will swing riders high up into the sky whilst also rotating a full 360 degrees over the duration of the ride.

The new ride “offers a totally new immersive experience that will leave riders eager to return”, said Amanda Thompson OBE, CEO of Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

It is anticipated that the Fantasy Island Spinning Mouse XXL will open in 2025.

The Guardian

The Guardian at Fantasy Island is a four-seater RoboCoaster simulator ride that operates in front of a projection dome. The ride was designed and built by KumbaK in 2014 for Simworx and originally operated in Hub Zero Dubai as Dragon Age: Flight of the Warden before being transferred to Fantasy Island in 2022.

We have been informed that the thrills may be stepped up a level in 2025 with the introduction of inversions and dramatic manoeuvres far beyond what riders currently experience on The Guardian.

New Ride at Flamingo Land Resort for 2025

Over the course of the 2024 season, Flamingo Land Resort has been busy dismantling the popular Lost River Ride. The large flume ride slowly made its way through the animal exhibits before treating riders to a thrilling drop at the end of the ride.

The ride was starting to show its age and was in need of an overhaul but the park have gone way beyond replacing a few worn parts. They have completely stripped the ride down, added new animal enclosures around the ride and rebuilt the ride with a smaller lift hill along with a mysterious square room between the top of the lift hill and the new lowered drop.

It appears that this new room may be fitted out with cutting edge AV technology from Simworx whose website states they are preparing to retrofit their Immersive Superflume technology into a British Theme Park. This will see the traditional flume boat lock onto a motion base for thrilling show-scenes featuring immersive media synched with dynamic movement.
