The History of Saltburn Miniature Railway
The origional line was first established by Mr H Dunn from County durham in 1947 and was approximately 275m long. It started adjacent to a pump house which was used to pump sea water up to the Zetland Hotel (which stanfds proudly at the top of Saltburn Bank). The track ran through a tunnel and along the “flood plain” of Skelton Beck. A reversing loop was installed around the Halfpenny Bridge (which crossed the vallay before being demolished in 1974). In 1950 the reversing loop was lifted and the line extended to the Valley Gardens via a bridge over Skelton Beck. In 1974 the then joint council owned Transit Bus Company operated the railway for a short while. After this the line lay derelict until 1983 when the Saltburn Miniature Railway Association was formed. Work was started to rebuild the railway in 1984. It was given a licence to carry passengers in October 1987, the first time since 1979.

At the end of September 2000 work was started to demolish the old station and shed from its position on the east side of Skelton Beck. Due to severe flooding in November of that year, the track was re-laid in its present position during 2001 and repairs were carried out to the Forest Halt Station. All the rolling stock was moved to the new engine shed at the end of December. The new Cat Nab station and ticket office were constructed in 2002 alongside Saltbirn Beck adjacent to Cat Nab car park. Following an inspection by the Health and Safety Executive the line was passed and began operating again on Easter Sunday 2003. It has continued to be run and maintained by volunteers to this day.
