The Hippodrome Circus in Great Yarmouth is one of only two purpose-built permanent circuses in England still in operation, and one of only three in the world with a circus floor that sinks into a pool.

Throughout the century the intimate arena has played host to an incredible variety of entertainment, from amazing water spectacles and stage shows to cinema and cine variety and even wartime use as a military practice shooting range!

The Peter Jay Back Stage Museum
View over a hundred years of circus memorabilia at the Peter Jay Back Stage Museum including Peter Jay’s own personal collection of Music Memorabilia, from his journey with Peter Jay and The Jaywalkers, rubbing shoulders with the Beatles and more Iconic Gigs.
Step back in time backstage and see how the original water mechanism and tanks work along with the Vintage and unique water props. View the Vintage sound, lighting and microphone collection and Vintage posters, signs and costumes.

Summer Spectacular Circus & Water Show
Each Summer the Hippodrome Circus features their legendary “Summer Spectacular Circus & Water Show” This is Great Britain’s longest-running summer season and features the world’s greatest circus acts alongside hilarious hosts. It also features the world-famous Water Spectacular where the entire ring sinks to reveal a gigantic swimming pool.

A Spectacular Finale
Built in 1903 by circus showman George Gilbert and dubbed “one of the seven wonders of the British seaside”, you can see the spectacular circus and water shows here. Look out in the finales as the ring sinks, giant fountains appear and the circus swimmers take centre stage.
The circus fills the entire ring with water, a must-see for visitors with the only other circus in the UK that performs this amazing feat being The Blackpool Tower Circus.
Food and Drink
Nestled to the left of The Hippodrome Circus is Cafe 1903 filled with the most stunning circus decor. It has a wonderful and welcoming atmosphere with wooden furniture and mesmerising memorabilia creating a real authentic experience. Serving freshly ground coffee, paninis, sandwiches and delicious homemade cakes it is the perfect setting to enjoy a drink or light bite before heading next door to the main event.

The Hippodrome Circus is located just off Great Yarmouth’s historic seafront behind Circus Circus Amusement Arcade.
