    Sky Garden

The Sky Garden in Central London opened in January 2015, it is located within 20 Fenchurch Street building. Spanning 3 storeys, the Sky Garden is a unique public space that offers 360-degree uninterrupted views across the City of London. Many tourists stop to admire the building (often referred to as the Walkie Talkie) from the outside but are unaware that you can also visit the Sky Garden on the upper floors for free. The Sky Garden features two restaurants, two café/bars and four dedicated event spaces over three floors.

The Sky Garden has been designed to create an open and vibrant place of leisure, offering visitors a rare chance to experience London from a different viewpoint. Visitors can wander around the exquisitely landscaped gardens, observation decks and an open-air terrace of what is London’s highest public garden.

Entry to the Sky Garden is free, but please note space is strictly limited and visits must be booked online in advance through their website.

The Sky Garden is open to the public from 10.00am until 6.00pm on Weekdays and 11.00am until 9.00pm on weekends. Selecting the best time to visit is often dependant on availability but our personal favourite is shortly before dusk. Enjoy a cocktail in the Sky Pod bar whilst watching the city of London transform as darkness falls.

Fenchurch Restaurant on Level 37 is a timeless restaurant that exudes traditional charm and taste with a modern twist. The restaurant serves the finest seafood such as oysters, fish and crustacean from responsibly caught sources as well as the seasonal game, meat and vegetarian dishes. The atmosphere is akin to the finest international members clubs, smart but informal with a highly personal touch.

    20 Fenchurch Street

The core of 20 Fenchurch Street provides the steel frame with its overall stability, but further up the building this changes. For the Sky Garden which begins at Level 35, the stability is provided by the fins which at that level become structural supports and span the open area forming a large portal frame. These 1200mm deep structural fins also support the glazing over the top and sides of the Sky Garden enclosure.

Design-wise the main challenges were how to structurally balance a building with such an unusual shape, while accommodating the unique floors plates without increasing the structural depth. To create this shape the steelwork is faceted to approximate the curvature of the facade. Generally, the faceting of the columns occurs every four storeys. This provides the optimum balance of minimising the complexity of the steel, while adhering to the architectural intent. However, in areas of high curvatures, such as near the top on the east and west elevations, columns have been faceted every two storeys.

If you are visiting London then book a trip to the Sky Garden in advance online. The attraction is very popular and you can’t just walk in on the day. The views of the city from the top are fantastic.
