World-Famous Locomotives & Exhibition Highlights
The museum’s collection spans over 100 locomotives and nearly 200 items of rolling stock telling the story of train travel from the early 19th century to the present day:
- Mallard (World Steam Speed Record Holder): Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, the A4 class locomotive Mallard reached a record-breaking 126mph down Stoke Bank on 3 July 1938 – a world steam record that still stands unbroken today.
- Shinkansen (Japanese Bullet Train): Step aboard the Series 0 Shinkansen, the pioneer of high-speed passenger rail that whisked travelers across Japan at 130mph in 1964. This is the only Bullet Train on display outside of Japan.

- Royal Trains in Station Hall: Walk along restored railway platforms in Station Hall to view lavish historic Royal Carriages used by Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, and Queen Elizabeth II.
- Eurostar Power Car: Explore a modern high-speed engineering icon capable of operating speeds up to 186mph (300km/h) through the Channel Tunnel.
- Duchess of Hamilton: Admire a stunning 1938-built Art Deco streamlined steam locomotive saved from scrap and restored to its original metallic grandeur.
- Model Railway & Inspection Pit: Watch the intricate ‘O’ gauge model railway in action or peek under real rolling stock in the interactive inspection pit.

History & Vision: Vision 2025 & Central Hall
The museum opened on Leeman Road in 1975 inside a former steam locomotive depot located just 700 metres from York Minster, becoming Britain’s first national museum outside London. It expanded across Leeman Road into Station Hall in 1990 and added “The Works” viewing gallery overlooking York Railway Station in 1999.
As part of its multi-million-pound Vision 2025 masterplan, the museum is transforming its site with a new central entrance hall connecting Great Hall and Station Hall, creating transformed public green spaces, reimagined open stores, and expanded interactive galleries.
Sister Site: Locomotion at Shildon
The National Railway Museum in York is part of The Science Museum Group (which includes the Science Museum in London, the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester, and the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford). In 2004, the museum opened its sister site – Locomotion in Shildon, County Durham, the world’s first railway town, housing further historic highlights from the national collection.
