Arrival & First Impressions
Arriving at Rudding Park at 4:00 PM, the tone for a relaxing retreat was set immediately. The grand architecture of the spa building surrounded by manicured lawns offered a warm, luxurious welcome. At the spa reception, we were greeted by attentive staff who seamlessly guided us through the waiver forms and provided us with electronic wristbands for access to the spa, whilst also acting as our locker keys.
After a helpful orientation detailing the layout of the multi-level facilities, we headed to the sleek, modern changing rooms. Robed, slippers on, and everyday stresses left behind, we were ready to begin our journey through the spa.
The Rooftop Spa Garden: An Oasis in the Sky
We ascended straight to the crown jewel of Rudding Park: the Rooftop Spa Garden. Set elevated above the estate, this serene sanctuary seamlessly connects indoor luxury with the natural beauty of the surrounding gardens.
The space felt delightfully peaceful as we stepped into the expansive main outdoor hydrotherapy hot tub. Designed with ergonomic seating and various water features, including an energetic volcano jet emitting an explosion of rejuvenating bubbles and targeted neck power jets designed to melt away muscle tension.
Adding to the VIP feel, we ordered drinks directly from the large outdoor hot tub, which were promptly delivered to us by the attentive bartender. Enjoying a cold drink while floating in warm, thermal waters overlooking the tree-lined gardens was a true highlight of the visit.
Exploring Thermal Cabins & Hidden Corners
Adjacent to the main hydro pool, we sampled the traditional panoramic sauna and the innovative Oxygen Room, designed to stimulate cell regeneration and enhance deep breathing. We then strolled across to the secluded spa garden on the opposite side of the roof level.
Here, nestled among lush planting, sunbeds, and outdoor lounge sofas, we discovered a second, more intimate hot tub. Having this smaller tub to ourselves provided a lovely setting for quiet conversation and complete relaxation. Nearby, two traditional cold-water immersion baths offered a refreshing contrast therapy option for the brave!
Indoor Pools & Sensory Relaxation Rooms
Exploring further down into the spa building, we visited the basement level housing Rudding Park’s dedicated Mind & Sense Relaxation Rooms. Each space is uniquely themed – offering acoustic, visual, and other sensory experiences ranging from starlit ceilings to gentle soundscapes.
Being avid pool lovers, we then migrated up to the ground floor to enjoy the impressive indoor swimming pool. Bathed in natural light, the pool area remained quiet and calm. Just steps away, we enjoyed the Juniper Sauna, infused with natural botanical aromatics that infused the air with a soothing forest scent.
Every sauna, steam room, and thermal feature throughout the building is accompanied by clear, elegant signage detailing the temperature, humidity levels, and health benefits of each treatment. Outside, an authentic cold water douse bucket added an invigorating splash on a warm summer evening before we headed back upstairs for a final steam and hot tub soak before dinner.
Fine Dining at Horto Restaurant
As our evening dining time approached, we showered, changed out of our spa attire, and made our way to Horto Restaurant, located within the spa complex. Horto (Latin for garden) is a contemporary restaurant with floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking a beautifully landscaped courtyard garden.
Our Spa & Dine package included a generous £45 per person dining allowance towards the menu, which showcases fresh, seasonal produce inspired by Rudding Park’s own Kitchen Garden.
Our Culinary Experience
Skipping starters to focus on main courses and desserts, the food served was outstanding in both presentation and flavour:
- Main Course: I selected the Smashed Dry-Aged Beef Burger (£24). Served on a toasted brioche bun with Provolone cheese, rich truffle aioli, caramelised red onions, smoky baba ganoush, fresh rocket, and crisp fries, it was rich, indulgent, and cooked to perfection.
- Flexible Small Plates Option: Horto offers a brilliant flexible menu format allowing guests to choose either traditional full-sized mains or a selection of smaller plates at a lower price point. Vicky opted for two ‘small’ plates: King Prawn Pil-Pil with Charred Sourdough (£12) and Tagliatelle with Crab, Lemon, Chilli & Tomato (£14). Far from being small snacks, both dishes were generous in portion size, vibrant in flavour, and exceptionally fresh.
- Desserts: Abundantly full from her savoury dishes, Vicky enjoyed a smooth, classic vanilla ice cream. I chose the decadent Hot Chocolate Mousse (£12), beautifully presented with candied orange, crisp chocolate tuile, and silky crème fraîche – a perfect balance of rich cacao and citrus brightness.
The Verdict: A True Luxury Sanctuary
Our evening at Rudding Park was nothing short of exceptional. From the warm hospitality and hydrotherapy pools of the Rooftop Spa Garden to the exquisite culinary execution at Horto, every detail is engineered for relaxation and indulgence.
