Sledmere House and Gardens, nestled in the heart of the picturesque Yorkshire Wolds, offers visitors a delightful blend of history, architecture, and beautifully maintained gardens. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a keen gardener, or simply looking for a peaceful day out with family, Sledmere is a destination that exceeds expectations.
A Stately Home Steeped in History
The house itself is an elegant Georgian country residence with a fascinating history dating back to the mid-18th century. The guided tours of the house are well worth taking. Friendly and knowledgeable staff bring the history of the Sykes family to life, sharing intriguing stories of the estate’s past and its wartime role. The interior is simply stunning, with intricately decorated rooms, antique furniture, and an impressive collection of artwork and tapestries that offer a glimpse into aristocratic life through the centuries.

Gardens That Inspire and Delight
The gardens at Sledmere are a true highlight. They are immaculately kept and designed to offer year-round interest. Visitors can wander through the Walled Garden, bursting with vibrant seasonal flowers, or stroll along the parterre, where formal beds are framed by clipped box hedges and colourful displays. The Rose Garden is especially beautiful in early summer, with its fragrant blooms and tranquil atmosphere. For those who enjoy nature and fresh air, the parkland walks around the estate provide sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.
Family-Friendly Fun and Seasonal Activities
Sledmere caters wonderfully to families. The rare breeds farm park is a firm favourite with younger visitors, offering the chance to meet friendly farm animals, from pigs and goats to donkeys and chickens. A particular highlight is the Lambing at Sledmere event, which we were lucky to experience as part of our visit. Usually held in spring, visitors can see newborn lambs up close, and learn about lambing from the farm team. This hands-on experience delights children and adults alike.

Throughout the year, Sledmere also hosts a variety of seasonal activities and events, such as:
- Easter trails and egg hunts
- Summer outdoor concerts and fairs
- Autumn craft markets
- Festive Christmas events, including wreath-making workshops and a charming Christmas market.
There’s also a good-sized playground for children to let off steam, and plenty of open space for picnics or games.
Excellent On-Site Facilities
The Coach House Café serves a tasty selection of light lunches, cakes, and refreshments — perfect for recharging during your visit. The gift shop is also worth a browse, with a lovely selection of local produce, plants, books, and souvenirs. Free parking and well-maintained facilities make the visit all the more relaxing.
