The Top Hat element is featured on some of the tallest and fastest roller coasters in the world. This element is commonly found on powered launch roller coasters. A standard top hat, also known as top cap, features a 90-degree rotation on both ascent and descent. This rotation means that the roller coaster train does not invert and after racing towards the sky, it pauses at the top offering riders a brief view before racing back down the other side.
Where to Experience a Top Hat
The best and only ride to feature a top hat in the UK is Stealth at Thorpe Park. The £12m thrill ride is the UK’s fastest roller coaster utilising a hydraulic launch to accelerate to 80 mph in 1.9 seconds before racing into a steep, vertical top hat element. The ride reaches a height of 205ft in under 2 seconds.
