Colossus at Thorpe Park
Colossus set the Record for being the first roller coaster in the World with ten inversions. An exact replica, called the 10 Inversion Roller Coaster, was later built at Chimelong Paradise in Guangzhou, China. Colossus retained its title of having more inversions than any other roller coaster in the world until 2013 when The Smiler with 14 inversions opened at Alton Towers.

The first inversion riders experience is a vertical lefthand loop, this is followed by a cobra roll situated in a partially flooded pit. Upon exiting the cobra roll, the second phase of the circuit begins, snaking slightly to the left, the roller coaster train is quickly pulled through two corkscrew elements. The first corkscrew inverts riders over a section of track from earlier in the ride and the second corkscrew inverts over the footpath which leads to the ride entrance. It is an exhilarating experience with the ride now reaching speeds of 45mph, travelling slightly above ground level whilst executing the corkscrews. The next thing riders face is four consecutive heartline rolls passing only 10ft above the footpath below. A final bend round to the left is completed as the train slowly approaches the station. Just before entering the station there is a final inversion which thrusts guests close to the surrounding foliage.
