The History & Design of Katanga Canyon
Opening in 1992, Katanga Canyon was designed to seamlessly connect the central park area with Gloomy Wood and Mutiny Bay. John Wardley crafted the layout so that the Runaway Mine Train and the neighbouring Congo River Rapids interact continuously with one another.
The ride begins with a sweeping helix passing behind the operator’s booth before skipping over bunny-hop hills beneath low-hanging mining props. It then swoops down across the rapids channel, plunging into a pitch-black subterranean tunnel where on-ride photos are captured. The train then speeds straight through the station platform to embark on its second lap!
