The MetroLand Heritage: From Gateshead to Devon
Rampage carries a legendary history in UK theme park lore. The roller coaster originally debuted in February 1988 at MetroLand, the famous indoor amusement park located within the Metrocentre in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. Operating simply as Roller Coaster (and later New Roller Coaster after a 1996 re-theme), the ride served as the indoor park’s flagship attraction for 20 years.
Because it was engineered to navigate around the internal building layout of the Metrocentre, the coaster was heavily over-engineered. Keen-eyed coaster fans visiting The BIG Sheep will notice distinct structural artifacts from its indoor days – such as reinforced support framing on the first lift hill and protective safety mesh cages under the tyre drive motors designed to protect shoppers walking beneath!
When MetroLand closed in April 2008 to make way for a cinema complex, the 2.5-ton coaster was carefully dismantled and placed into secure storage in Blackpool. In 2014, The BIG Sheep acquired the ride, embarking on an ambitious £1m relocation project involving 80 car-sized concrete foundations. Painted in natural shades of green and black to blend into the North Devon countryside, the ride briefly opened as Big One before being officially named Rampage on 22 July 2016.
