What is a Lido?

Enjoy the thrill of the water all year round at these fantastic Outdoor Pools and Lidos located across the UK. A Lido is more than just an outside swimming pool. The term “Lido” is from the name of the place in Venice where bathing took place. Lidos usually have areas for sunbathing, relaxing and eating and are designed for activities around water. Some of our favourite Lidos also include waterslides and diving boards.

The Lido Guide

From beautiful art deco lidos to humble, fiercely loved community pools, this is the definitive photographic guide to over 120 lidos in the UK. Collected together for the first time, each entry details what makes the pool unique and what swimming there is like, as well as providing information about cafés, tuck shops, changing rooms and more.

A Perfect Retreat

Offering the perfect retreat on a hot British summer’s day, lovers of swimming in the open air will want to make the most of the country’s many traditional lidos and open-air swimming pools. There are fewer lidos now than there were in their 1930s heyday. But many of those that do remain retain their Art Deco flourishes and provide a perfect retreat for relaxing.

Opening times and prices are changing on a regular basis so we recommend that you use the links provided to check the details on your chosen destination’s official website before visiting.
