The English Lake District
Start your visit to the Lakes Aquarium by discovering more about The English Lake District. The Lake District is one of the British Isles’ most awe-inspiring and breathtaking landscapes. The lakes and fells offer a lush environment for a range of fascinating creatures. Dive deep into the lakes and discover what creatures live beneath the water.
Here you’ll find – Perch, three-spined stickleback, white-clawed crayfish, koi carp and many more. Admire some of the most majestic creatures in the Lake as they swim just inches away from you!
Waters of the World – Asia
Continue your journey of discovery as you explore the mysterious creatures that inhabit the waters of the World, starting with Asia. Spanning half of the Northern hemisphere, Asia is home to a whole host of diverse aquatic ecosystems. In amongst the mangrove swamps and small streams of Asia, you’ll find a pair of mischievous Asian Short Clawed Otters.
Waters of the World – Americas
Next stop on your journey is the Americas – home to species from North, South and Central America. Dive deep into the mighty Amazon River and discover what lies beneath the waters of this mighty rainforest.
Here you’ll find – Angelfish, blind cavefish, red-bellied piranha and axolotl.
Rainforest
Step out of the ocean and into the hot and humid rainforest to experience what life is like beneath the tropical treetops. Blue Poison Dart Frogs leap through the foliage and giant land snails in the depths. Tropical rainforests are a rich and bountiful environment, as you walk through the Rainforest exhibits you’ll get an idea of the abundance of life found in these lush environments. Leafcutter ants are an integral part of the rainforest ecosystem, and you’ll find them showcased at the centre of the Rainforest exhibit.
Here you’ll find – Blue poison dart frog, giant land snail, skink, dyeing dart frog, golden gecko, strawberry dart frog, leopard tortoise and leaf cutter ants.
Waters of the World – Africa
Your journey around the world takes you deep into the heart of Africa, home to the world’s longest river, the Nile.
Here you’ll find – Elephantnose fish, Mbu pufferfish and African lungfish, among others!
Virtual Dive Bell
Experience the world’s first Virtual Dive Bell and come face to face with awesome creatures including a terrifying bull shark, charging hippo and fierce Nile crocodile – all without getting wet! State of the art technology provides a unique and totally absorbing insight into life in the murky depths.
Beneath The Lake
Cross a bridge over the water before descending to the depths of Lake Windermere. Journey below Lake Windermere as you stroll through the impressive underwater tunnel where native British fish are waiting to be discovered. Lake Windermere is 10.5 miles long and up to 67 metres deep, but from the picturesque shoreline, you can see very little of what lies beneath the dark waters. Don’t miss feeding time where you’ll see the surface-dwelling ducks dive deep into the waters in search of food.
Here you’ll find – Common Carp, mirror carp, starlet, pike, goldeneye ducks, mandarin ducks and tufted ducks.
At The Seashore
Celebrate the best of the seaside – from Britain and beyond! Explore coral reef tanks with exotic species and view the creatures in the rock pools. End your journey with a visit to Morecambe Bay, the second-largest bay in the British Isles and a local gem, as you marvel at the rays in the Morecambe Bay display.
Here you’ll find – Big belly seahorses, lesser spotted catsharks, turbot, spiny and British spider crabs, Pipefish, lumpsuckers, starfish and pollock.
Travelling Lakes Aquarium
Lakes Aquarium is situated on the southern shore of Lake Windermere at Lakeside, Newby Bridge, Cumbria. The attraction is clearly signposted from M6 junction 36. Follow the fish symbols along the A590 to Newby Bridge. Take first right after the roundabout, over the bridge and follow the road to Hawkshead for approximately 1 mile to Lakeside.
Tavel by Steam Train
On the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway. From the station at Haverthwaite (situated on the main A590) traditional steam engines transport you along the River Leven to the Aquarium at Lakeside. Trains run Easter to end of October.
Travel by Boat
Lake Cruisers and Steamers provide regular sailings from the popular towns of Bowness and Ambleside to the Aquarium at Lakeside. Savings can be made by purchasing combined Aquarium and cruise tickets.
