Sik at Flamingo Land Resort in North Yorkshire was originally scheduled to open in 2020. Sadly Covid-19 delayed the construction of the ride with its opening date pushed back until summer 2022. Experience the fantastic £18m Thrill Ride which features 10 inversions and only lap bars.
Sik at Flamingo Land
Sik features a similar layout to Colossus at Thorpe Park in Surrey which also has 10 inversions, both these rides are manufactured by Intamin.
Sik – Flamingo Land Resort Ride Station
Sik
The roller coaster officially opened on Saturday 2nd July 2022 on what was a very proud day for both Flamingo Land Resort and Sik Silk. The two Yorkshire brands have collaborated to give Sik a street fashion theme. The £18m project represents 3 years of work and planning, the owners of Sik Silk, Barry Gill, Sam Kaye and David Johnston are great friends with Flamingo Land owner Gordon Gibb.

The queue line for Sik makes its way underneath Velocity, the UK’s first and only motorbike launch coaster. The ride theming includes a lake located underneath the Cobra Roll and the ride also passes through two underground tunnels.
Inside the rides station the atmosphere could be compared to a nightclub with dance music, disco lights and a feel-good upbeat vibe.
The Ride Experience
Sik offers a thrilling ride experience with awesome hangtime through each and every inversion to the sheer pace it keeps throughout. The mist tunnels around the cobra roll also add to the experience, this awesome ride certainly isn’t for the faint of heart.
The mist tunnels situated both around the cobra roll and at the end of the ride are also a nice touch too.
Ride Testing
It was an interesting first test run for the ride. The dummies used for the initial tests were not suitable for the rides restraint system and as the ride traversed the series of heartline rolls a number of dummies left their seats.
Click Here to watch a video of the test run in action which was filmed live when the incident occurred.
Inversion – Dummy Falls From Ride Highlighted
A great addition for Flamingo Land
Flamingo Lands new ride was referred to as Inversion but on the 30th May 2022 the ride’s name was confirmed as ‘Sik’. The ride is a fantastic addition to the North Yorkshire Theme Park. This roller coaster was originally manufactured by Intamin for Hopi Hari Theme Park in Brazil. Due to financial problems, Hopi Hari was unable to build the roller coaster after it was delivered. After several years in storage, it was sold to the owner of Outlet Premium São Paulo, in a leaseback arrangement. The park was to use the sale money to construct the ride and then lease it from the owner of Outlet Premium São Paulo, Mr Federer. This did not go as planned and Mr Federer offered it for sale with Flamingo Land Resort successfully acquiring the ride.

Multi Inversion Coasters
Intamin’s Multi-Inversion Coasters are designed and built with the same care and attention to emphasize on quality and safety as all of Intamin’s rides. By carefully selecting the sequence and style of inversions with the emphasis on smooth transitions and heart-line rolls, this coaster is less stressful than many coasters with fewer inversions.
These Roller Coasters have been developed with the design target to create the most spectacular roller coasters available. Special care has been taken to arrange the ride elements in a way to never impart an uncomfortable feeling to riders, leading to a dynamic ride with smooth and gentle transitions from one section to another. To achieve a memorable experience, Intamin’s engineers use the most advanced state of the track and train art technology.
Hopi Hari – Brazil
Flamingo Lands roller coaster was originally built for Hopi Hari Theme Park in Brazil. This is not the only connection Hopi Hari has with the UK as the park is also home to the Thunder Looper, Alton Towers legendary roller coaster. With speeds of up to 60mph, the vertical loop roller coaster opened at Alton Towers in 1990 and was a huge hit, mainly due to the speed and the sheer drama of the fact that you had just a lap bar holding you in. Riders loved the ride thanks to its bum off the seat terror and hold on for dear life drama.
Due to a number of reasons, Thunder Looper only lasted six years at Alton Towers, the main one being that it breached the rules of the park’s planning regulations stating that all rides must be below tree height due to the local environment. There were also complaints about the thunderous roar from the ride which was upsetting the local cows, causing them to calf too early. When the ride left Alton Tower it was relocated to Hopi Hari in Brazil where it still operates today as Superman: Katapul.
A Smooth and Exciting Ride
The lift section with cable drive brings the train to the highest point of the track, where it travels by gravity through figures such as space diver curve, vertical loop, cobra roll, double spiral screw, and heartrolls, resulting in the number of inversions required and designed to provide inversions with low “G” forces. The track design and layout are set up for the maximum number of direction and banking changes to make the ride as exciting as possible while keeping it smooth.
Thanks to the wider track, it is possible to use the latest generation of trains – designed for Mega and Giga Coaster – with longer life, more comfortable seating and modern restraint system, as well as improved aesthetics.
