History of The Blackpool Tower

The Blackpool Tower was inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The iconic landmark first opened to the public on the 14th May 1894 and is 518 feet (158 metres) tall. The total cost for the design and construction of the tower and buildings was approximately £290,000. 2,500 tonnes of iron and 93 tonnes of cast steel were used to construct the tower. Unlike the Eiffel Tower, Blackpool Tower is not free-standing. Its base is hidden by the building which houses Blackpool Tower Circus.

The tower’s design was ahead of its time. As a writer for the BBC noted: “In heavy winds, the building will gently sway, what a magnificent Victorian engineering masterpiece.”

When the tower opened, 3,000 customers took the first rides to the top. Guests paid sixpence for admission, an additional sixpence for a ride in the lifts to the top, and a further sixpence to visit the circus.

The Blackpool Tower Fire

In 1897 the top of the tower caught fire, with the fire being visible up to fifty miles away.

The Tower was not painted properly during the first thirty years and it became corroded. This lead to discussions about demolishing it, but a decision was made to rebuild it instead. Between 1921 and 1924 all the steelwork in the structure was replaced and renewed.

In 1977 The top of the tower was painted silver as part of Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee celebrations.

In 1992 The Blackpool Tower complex was renamed Tower World and was opened by Diana, Princess of Wales. The tower is usually painted in dark red, except for its centenary year in 1994 when it was painted gold by abseiling painters. A two-inch-thick glass floor panel was opened at the top of the tower in 1998. In 2007 a laser beam was installed which could be seen 30 miles away.

* It takes seven years to paint the Tower structure from top to bottom.
* Originally 10,000 light bulbs were used to illuminate the Tower.
* 25,000 eco-friendly LED lights now illuminate the Blackpool Tower.
